Adam Waterford vs. Isaac Baker case transcript, 1830-1841.

Consists of the original handwritten transcript of the Waterford vs. Baker case plus a typed transcript of the case and a photocopy of the original. The suit, brought in May 1829 in Chancery Court in Rogersville, Tenn., against Isaac Baker, was transferred to the U.S. district court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1830. Major issues included disputed tracts of land in Tazewell Co., Va., and Sullivan Co., Tenn., the sale of forty head of cattle, and the ownership of a slave named Walter Waterford, Adam Waterford's brother. The respondent died in 1830 and the plaintiff died in 1835. The heirs, David Waterford and his siblings and John Baker, reopened the case in 1835. A final decree was issued in 1840 in the plaintiff's favor.

Adam Waterford, "a freeman of colour," had been born a slave during the last quarter of the 18th century but emancipated sometime prior to March 1817 when he was granted permission by the Tazewell County (Va.) Court to settle in that county. By April 1817, he was residing in Sullivan County, Tenn., where he had purchased 206 acres of land.
